    First, these blocks really are wonderful. Besides using them to make historical blocks or designing a pattern, I found myself needing a certain size star block to fit inside a unit and turned to these blocks to choose one because each has instructions for the same 5 or 6 sizes, so I knew it would have something to fit the space I needed! Also, C&T Publishing also produces a card deck box on Color to help select colors for a project and learn about the color wheel; it's fantastic! Second, I know you are only relaying both sides of info that you've encountered on the subject of use of historical blocks in the underground railroad, but I have found it laughable since studying this topic 3 years ago that the only reason people believe this is a myth and untrue is because it was info passed down to generations orally and, hence, is folklore (and some say, then, a "myth"). Should the slaves have asked the master of the big house for pen and paper to write it down so it could be disseminated ... and found ... with dire consequences? Should we swipe left on the Biblical teachings learned orally on the plantation (or anywhere else in the world) because they were merely passed down orally? I have yet to come across any significant argument against quilts being used as messaging in the underground railroad -- especially given that oral history and folklore is substantiated by historians when it comes to other aspects of history, and it is not valid to say, "Since it can't be proven with written records, it is not true or likely not true." Further, one may find it interesting to learn that quilts were also used as messaging during the Revolutionary War!

    • @joyfulandmerryquilting
      @joyfulandmerryquilting День тому

      Yes - you have some very strong arguments supporting the authenticity of the subject, although I would hesitate to call anyone's research or opinions that differ from yours "laughable". I think this is a debate that will never be won by either side. As I said in the video - it's important that we know both sides of every story - if there are 2 sides. After giving a lecture on the Underground Railroad BEFORE the "myth" issue began widely circulating, I was approached by someone who questioned the authenticity of my presentation. This prompted me to do more research before I continued to speak on the subject. There are unanswered questions in the story and I feel it's important to be able to speak on both sides allowing the fact and the myth to be openly discussed and then let the listener make an informed decision. Again - just my opinion - you are certainly entitled to yours.

    • @TheHawkeyeQuilter
      @TheHawkeyeQuilter День тому

      @@joyfulandmerryquilting it's the contradiction that the "experts" or historians put on the measure and acceptability of oral history in one area but not another that I find laughable. But, yes, people must know about this debate so that they can look at the information and decide for themselves.

    • @joyfulandmerryquilting
      @joyfulandmerryquilting День тому

      I absolutely agree! To be honest - I LOVE the "oral history" when it comes to the Underground Railroad and have found the information to be so intriguing and thought-provoking - which is why I enjoy talking about it! Thanks so much for your input!

    I tried your method of using the Elmers washable glue for basting my quilt sandwich. My thread keeps breaking, skipped stitches and it’s frustrating. My quilt looks horrible. I changed the needle, rewound my bobbin, using a Singer 401a machine and a Janome MC6600 machines. Polycotton bobbin, embroidery thread for top stitches. When I tested a fabric swatch with the exact fabrics and threads I planned to use the thread broke. Why is this happening. If it doesn’t break, it skipped stitches. I’m disappointed and frustrated on what my quilt now looks like.

    • @joyfulandmerryquilting
      @joyfulandmerryquilting 2 дні тому

      I'm sorry to hear that you're having a tough time, and I completely understand how frustrating it can be when things don't go as planned. However, I want to clarify that in my video, I demonstrated using washable glue specifically for basting the binding on my quilt, not for basting the entire quilt sandwich. I haven't personally used glue to baste a quilt sandwich, so I can't speak to that method. While I know some quilters have had success with it, my experience is limited to binding, where I've had good results without issues like thread breakage or skipped stitches. Several viewers have also shared positive experiences with using glue for binding, but it's important to note that techniques can vary in their effectiveness depending on the project and materials used. I'm truly sorry that your quilt hasn't turned out as you'd hoped, but I recommend consulting resources or experts specifically focused on glue-basting quilt sandwiches for more tailored advice. Thank you for sharing your experience, and I hope this helps clarify the method I demonstrated.

    Cotton thread is great for dry areas but not where it's humid. It rots over time. I like polyester/cotton blend. I am 65 and have seen quilts made with cotton. Not great. The thread gives out sooner than the cotton fabric people used. As for a cutting mat the best overall mat for me is the gray friskers mat. I am telling you I have had mine more than 15 years and it's still going strong. If you have the money to waste on expensive then by all means go for it but if you are on a strict budget then go with tested and true. I use two mats. One is small the other one is 24 inches. I use the smaller one to turn as I cut if I need it. I buy the cheaper rulers. I use the easy rule. That is their brand name. I have one 6.5 inch ruler, one 12.5 inch ruler and one 24x6.5 inch ruler. I need no others for making quilts. I do have a few that have been freebies from buying rotary cutters. I do not own a seam ripper. I use my rotary cutter. It's a lot faster. I did practice on a some junk fabric. I have never ruined anything using a rotary cutter. I would suggest good scissors. I use gingher brand. Yes they are expensive but if you take care of them they will last for years and years. I sew over pins with my old sewing machine. It's a cheap janome and I have not had problems doing that. I do not use my good machine to sew over pins. If that machine stops working then I will just buy a very cheap vintage machine for that. I do not agree with everything she is on about but there are some things I would use. I use a t-fal iron and that has lasted 10 years so far. And if you are so worried about iron in the water use filtered water. Every item she has mentioned except the pins and seam ripper is expensive. If I was going to buy a new machine would be a janome. However I now have a juki tl-2010q and I can tell you I would never use a domestic. That machine is fast and they are heavy. They are semi-industrial. I did not buy local and I am self taught. I would never afford lessons or an expensive brand until now. I think she should have named this thread..... 10 expensive items I WISH I'd Known About as a Beginner Quilter. I think the thing is if you plan on quilting the quilt after you have made it then go for a semi industrial machine. It's real hard to quilt a quilt on a tiny plastic domestic sewing machine. Been there done that and it does not work and it will break your machine over time. Get the right machine for the job. That is my honest opinion and I do respect the OP for her opinions.

    • @joyfulandmerryquilting
      @joyfulandmerryquilting 6 днів тому

      You are certainly welcome to your opinions and I thank you for not only watching but for your detailed explanation as to why you feel as you do. I have also been quilting for 30+ years and I have been very happy with the supplies I purchase. We all have our favorites - for a variety of reasons, and these are mine. Thanks for sharing SnarkyFunkster!

    • @SnarkyFunkster
      @SnarkyFunkster 6 днів тому

      @@joyfulandmerryquilting My very first machine was a spartan. It was My Mothers. I can remember as a child using it to make clothes. That was 55 or so years ago. I still have that machine. I don't like it but I have it. I think I would love to buy expensive tools but really they are just too expensive. I have to admit I like temu for certain sewing supplies and the dollar store. Batting is a big cost now days. I have a longarm and cannot afford the good stuff so I have to buy the synthetic batting. I did have a business at one time making and selling quilts but I have retired and I am loving it. I really think the best piece of advice is that walking foot. I highly agree with that and the needles. I use the skinny needles too. They bend sometimes. I have used staples on certain things and glue sticks. Mostly I use the staples for bag making to hold the pieces together. Sorry I tend to move around a lot in my thoughts and just put them out there with no rhyme or matter. I am sorry if I was a little harsh. I should have put it out there with more thought. Maybe some machine reviews would be helpful. There are so many of them out there now. For me I would never buy a singer or a brother. Just had very bad experiences with them. Tension and timing. Ok I will end on that. I talk and type too much and honestly maybe I should not express my opinions.

    I’m a beginning quilter and want to thank you for your videos. I find them very helpful. Since you mentioned the heat erasable markers reappearing on fabric when cold (and I’d been hearing this on other quilting videos) I decided to do a test. I wrote on 2 pieces of the same fabric, put both in a baggie and put 1 in the fridge and 1 in the freezer. On the fabric in the fridge, 40 degrees F, the markings did not reappear. On the freezer fabric, 0 degrees F, they did come back but fainter than when originally marked. Good news, I reapplied heat to the freezer fabric and the marks disappeared.

    Could you cut your tube strips on the bias and end up with non-biased edges?

    • @joyfulandmerryquilting
      @joyfulandmerryquilting 7 днів тому

      I would think the "first cut" would be a little tricky since that would be a bias cut - and then I would worry about stretchiness of those two bias strips as I was sewing the two strips together. Maybe with a lot of pressing solution you could stabilize those two original strips? Let me know if you try it!

    I use the Frixion pens to mark my patterns (and iron them off), I also use different colors sticky notes I number and cut into strips to put on my pieces, but my favorite way is to just number the seam allowance with different colored regular pens on the back side of the pieces - these don't wipe off or iron off and you don't see them from the front.

    I have a bleeding problem with dark blue. I first check for color in the sink, hot water. If it is slighte I can just put it in a rinse and spin…dry as usual. If the fabric is really bleeding, I will heat vinegar and soak until water is cool, rinse and spin . This usually works the first time. I’ve been doing this for years.

    I make a copy of the pattern cutting instructions and steps to mark up instead of the orginal. This does not violate copyright law and if the author states no copies without author permission is erroneous. You can make a copy for personal use, not for sharing or selling. I only copy relevant pages to mark up, coss off, or whatever to my heart's content. Same for magazines, so it's not marked up or tearing out of pages.

As the pattern instructions says for sewing I am only dealing with two bags at a time and then the third bag, etc. For repetitive blocks I stack my pieces in block form so my block may be 20 pieces deep, chain piece each step and lay right back down in the block. I also put a pin on the side I am supposed to sew.

    ❤ T-shirt quilts with different block sizes into a queen quilt? How to make the top with sashing an fill-in blocks. Have you done this and how?

      Actually I have, Vickie! It was a twin size, but the squares were all different sizes. I framed each t-shirt square with the same fabric. Then, I actually positioned the squares in a "path" that went to the right and to the left and to the right, etc. , back and forth, with fabric rectangles connecting the blocks together. Then, I used my background fabric adding rectangles to make all of the "blocks" the same size. I finished by sewing them together in rows. I'll have to do a tutorial on it. It's kind of hard to explain. Send me an email mary@joyfulandmerryquilting.com and I'll send you a picture.

    Great idea to make jar openers. I plan to put them in my adult children's and grandchildren's stockings. Thanks for sharing, Mary & Company❣️ Hoping that you reach your goal for 25,000 subscribers soon. Excellent viewer suggestion to use one on top& another on the bottom for extra grip.

    Great ideas. I just finished a pattern in a magazine that took me a while to make. I really could have used one of these methods to help keep my place. Thank you!

    I use a large post it note, like the 3X5, I place it under each step, so that I am not confused as to which step I am. When I finish step1, I write 1 om my post it note, then remove and place below the bext step.
